After winning his first national championship in college football, Jim Harbaugh is debating to return to the NFL or to return to Michigan. The Wolverines have reportedly offered a mega contract to Harbaugh, but the language in the contract has also been the reported holdup between the two sides — along with Harbaugh’s desire to win a Super Bowl.
Harbaugh has scheduled a second meeting with both the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers, but it’s looking more likely Harbaugh could return back to California to coach the Chargers.
ESPN insider Adam Schefter was on the Pat McAfee Show on Monday and he was asked about the Harbaugh situation. Schefter, a Michigan graduate, believes the Michigan coach is trending toward making a return to the NFL.
“I do think it’s tracking that way and I do think it’s trending that way,” Schefter said on the Pat McAfee Show. “It seems like there’s a lot of interest, not just from the Chargers, but from the Falcons, so I think there’s a realistic chance he’s going to wind up in the NFL. I think that’s the belief of a lot of people. But right now, he’s got to go through these interviews still.
“He’s going to meet with the Chargers at some point this week. It’ll be the second time he meets with them. Everybody seems to think that that is a match that makes a lot of sense from both sides’ perspectives, which I think it does.”
Harbaugh last coached in the NFL back in 2014. He was with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-2014 and took the 49ers to a Super Bowl, but lost to his brother John and the Baltimore Ravens.
This has been a seasonal thing between Michigan, Harbaugh, and the NFL. His name has been attached to NFL openings since his arrival at Michigan. Harbaugh was close to signing with both the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos in the past, but ultimately returned to Michigan.
The Chargers appear to be a great fit for Harbaugh if he would choose to return to the league. LA has a great, young quarterback in Justin Herbert that Harbaugh could coach up and it wouldn’t take long for Harbaugh to get the team rolling.
But Harbaugh isn’t the only name the Chargers have been looking into. According to Schefter, Harbaugh isn’t the end all for the Chargers.
“And let’s see if they can figure it out, bridge their differences,” Schefter said. “The Chargers have cast a wide net with a lot of people. And it may just be that they settle on Jim Harbaugh, it wouldn’t be a surprise. But they’re talking to a lot of different people as well.”
It’s not clear what Harbaugh is going to do, he probably doesn’t even know yet, but there should be some dominos that fall sooner than later.
