While it’s not official yet, it’s looking like the hiring of Sherrone Moore to become the next head coach at Michigan is going to happen sooner than later.
It’s a bittersweet moment for most Michigan fans. The Wolverines are losing their nine-year head coach in Jim Harbaugh who had an incredible last three years in Ann Arbor. Harbaugh led Michigan to three-consecutive wins over Ohio State, three-straight Big Ten championships, and a national title this season.
But when the ball is kicked in 2024, a new era of football will begin for Michigan. And it’s looking certainly like it will be coach Moore on the sideline running the show. So what does Sherrone Moore bring to the table? He’s young and relatable to the players, he will maintain the current culture set in Michigan, and he is one heck of a recruiter. Moore is arguably the top recruiter on the Michigan staff and if he has the full say of the program, the Wolverines have a chance to recruit at a higher level than they currently are.
Here are some of the top commits Sherrone Moore has brought to Michigan during his time in Ann Arbor.
- 2019 S Daxton Hill
-
Hill was the biggest get for Moore, according to the rankings. Hill was a five-star recruit and the 23rd-ranked prospect in the nation. Michigan was in a back-and-forth battle with Alabama, but with a big thanks to Moore — the Wolverines won him over. Hill enjoyed a three-year career with Michigan before becoming a first-round pick to the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 2021 QB J.J. McCarthy
-
This was a big one. Moore was considered the primary recruiter for McCarthy. Obviously, McCarthy wanted to play under Jim Harbaugh and the two of them had a great relationship, but Moore was doing plenty of the courting to land the talented five star. He went on to lead the Wolverines to a national title win over Washington. According to 247Sports, McCarthy was the 38th-ranked prospect in the class.
- 2020 OT Andrew Gentry
-
Gentry, who originally committed to Virginia, but was away from football for two seasons for a mission trip. Afterward, he decided to come to Michigan to play football. As the offensive line coach, Moore was a big part in bringing him to Michigan. Gentry is in line to have a potential starting role in 2024 for the Wolverines. Out of high school he was a four-star and the 147th-ranked prospect.
- 2021 OT Giovanni El-Hadi
-
Another offensive lineman who hasn’t seen a ton of playing time at Michigan, but has looked good when he has. El-Hadi was the 88th-ranked prospect in the 2021 cycle. After seeing a few starts in 2022, he looks to be a lock to start in 2024 on the Wolverines’ line.
- 2021 RB Donovan Edwards
-
This one is listed at No. 5 just because Sherrone Moore wasn’t considered the primary recruiter. In fact, Jay Harbaugh was considered the primary recruiter, but either way, Moore had a hand in bringing the in-state running back to Michigan. Edwards was a five-star and the 42nd-ranked recruit in the class, according to 247Sports. With Blake Corum off to the NFL, Michigan fans will finally get to see a whole season of Edwards as the lead back for the Wolverines.
Other notable players Moore was the primary recruiter during their respective recruiting cycle:
- Braiden McGregor
- AJ Henning
- Andrew Sprague
- Blake Frazier
- Trevor Keegan
- Rayshaun Benny
- Raheem Anderson
- Amir Herring
- Andrel Anthony
While two of the players mentioned above haven’t seen a ton of playing time at Michigan, all five were considered big-time gets for the Wolverines. Now that Moore has a chance to guide the recruiting in the direction he wants it to go, the Wolverines have a chance to really take off starting soon.
