Charles Woodson is universally recognized as the GOAT when it comes to Michigan Football, so when he gives out a top five list it carries some significant weight. Woodson recently sat down with former Wolverine Taylor Lewan on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast to talk all things Michigan Football, and he listed off his top five Wolverines of all-time.
Here they are (in no particular order):
Desmond Howard, WR
The first name out of Woodson’s mouth was fellow Wolverine and Heisman trophy winner, Desmond Howard. Now serving as one of the leading voices on ESPN’s College Gameday crew, Howard is widely recognized as one of the very best to come through Ann Arbor. In fact, the Big Ten network placed Howard on the Mt. Rushmore of Michigan Football back in 2014. His jersey number (21) is officially retired at Michigan, along with Gerald Ford (48), Tom Harmon (98), Ron Kramer (87), Bennie Osterbaan (47), and Albert, Alvin, and Whitey Wistert (11).
Anthony Carter, WR
Anthony Carter was one of the most productive wide receivers in Michigan Football history during his time in Ann Arbor. He made the coveted No. 1 jersey famous at Michigan, and his touchdown against Indiana as time expired is widely recognized as one of the greatest plays in program history.
Steve Hutchinson, OL
Steve Hutchinson played for the Wolverines from 1996-2000, and was part of the national championship winning team under head coach Lloyd Carr back in 1997 (the same season that Woodson won the Heisman trophy). Hutchinson was a four-year starter, a two-year team captain, and a unanimous first-team All-American as a senior.

Jake Long, OL
Jake Long played at Michigan from 2003-07 under Lloyd Carr, and was a first team All-Big Ten selection (coaches and media), along with Big Ten offensive lineman of the year during his senior season. Long would eventually go on to become the No. 1 overall pick by the Miami Dolphins in the 2008 NFL Draft – becoming just the second Wolverine in program history to be selected No. 1 overall (Tom Harmon, 1941).

Blake Corum, RB
Woodson couldn’t leave out one of the top members from the 2023 national championship winning team, rolling with running back Blake Corum to round out his top five. Corum finished his incredible Michigan career as the program’s all-time leader in single-season rushing touchdowns (27), total touchdowns (28) and points scored (168; also a Big Ten record), all set in 2023.
Corum also finished his career ranked seventh on the all-time rushing list at Michigan (3,737 yards), as well as the program’s career record-holder in rushing touchdowns (58), total touchdowns (61), and career points scored (356)
