In what might be the least surprising thing ever, Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers went out and signed former Michigan FB Ben Mason on Tuesday.

It was quite known when Mason was in Ann Arbor that he was one of Harbaugh’s favorite players for a variety of reasons. Mason was versatile in able to play fullback/H-back — along with attempting to play defensive tackle for the Wolverines. But arguably the biggest reason Harbaugh loved Mason was how tough of a player he was in Ann Arbor.

Mason played under Harbaugh from 2017-2020. He appeared in 45 games during that span and carried the ball 37 times for 87 yards with nine rushing scores. Mason also caught the ball three times for 32 yards and a score. He compiled 14 tackles on defense for the Wolverines.

Mason was a fifth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens during the 2021 NFL Draft. He’s been with the Ravens two different times, along with the New England Patriots practice squad and the Chicago Bears practice squad.

Mason will need to carve out a role in LA, but it wouldn’t be too shocking to see him become a bruising FB in the NFL under Harbaugh like he was for the Michigan Wolverines.
