Amorion Walker came to Michigan back in 2022 as a heralded three-star wide receiver who chose the Wolverines over powerhouses like Alabama, LSU, and Notre Dame. But for as much talk as there was about the 6-foot-4 athletic WR, Walker struggled to get onto the field for the Wolverines and Jim Harbaugh chose to switch Walker to cornerback in 2023. Things didn’t go as planned and Walker entered the transfer portal following Michigan’s National Championship run.
Walker transferred to Oxford to play at Ole Miss, but that lasted a semester and now Walker is back at Michigan. Speaking with reporters recently during the Sound Body Sound Mind and the Will Johnson camp, Walker talked about his decision to come back to Ann Arbor.
“The team, the comradery, the guys — I love being here,” Walker said on what drove him back to Michigan. “I felt like something was missing. I feel like I can get the most out of myself in the last couple of years I have.”
The wide speculation was that Michigan would play Walker at WR this season. Sherrone Moore confirmed that recently and Walker also confirmed this. He said getting the chance to move back to wideout was a big selling point to come back.
“A good amount,” said Walker. “I’m going to play a lot of receiver this year. I’m ready to get to it and jump back in.
The last time Walker played any receiver it was with J.J. McCarthy at the helm. Now it’s a battle of Alex Orji, Jack Tuttle, and presumingly Davis Warren to lead the charge. He said he’s building chemistry with the quarterbacks and feels like playing WR again is just like putting on an old pair of shoes.
“That’s been good too,” said Walker. “Getting that connection with those guys, even though I felt like I had that my freshman year. Like I said, putting on an old pair of shoes.”
One thing that Walker has on his side moving forward is the fact that he knows what it’s like playing on the other side of the football. He explained it’s like wearing another set of lens and now he knows what the defender might be expecting when he lines up at WR this fall.
“I’m gonna say it’s gonna help me a hell of a lot,” Walker said. “Playing defense, you look at it in a different lens. What you not feel so good about, things you feel good in areas, pushes you the wrong way when you’re back there. I just kinda know all those tips and how I’m gonna approach the game and attack guys. I think it’s gonna help me a lot.”
Walker enters an unproven, but talented, receiving corps this fall. Michigan will be looking for production to team up with both Tyler Morris and Semaj Morgan. Fred Moore, Kendrick Bell, and transfer CJ Charleston are all battling for playing time as Walker will be.
