Dusty May has just about filled his team for the 2024-25 basketball season, but there is still one last scholarship that needs to be awarded to the Michigan basketball squad. According to college basketball insider, Jon Rothstein, Florida State transfer Jamir Watkins will be considering six schools and the Wolverines are among them.
Watkins is a 6-foot-7 forward who has played three seasons of college basketball. He began his career at VCU where he played two seasons before transferring to FSU for the 2023 basketball season. He is considered the 10th-best transfer by 247Sports.
In 28.2 minutes on the floor, Watkins was the leader of the Seminoles team. He averaged a team-high 15.6 points and six rebounds. Watkins shot 45.7% from the field and was an above-average 3-point shooter averaging nearly 35% from long range.
The expectation was that Michigan would like to fill the final spot on its roster with a guard. But with the Wolverines targeting Watkins, it appears that either Michigan is going after the best available talent or May feels like the Wolverines need another forward.
At forward, Michigan went out and grabbed Yale’s Danny Wolf — who can play either the 4 or 5. The Wolverines also got Alabama’s Sam Walters who is a little raw and unproven. Michigan does also return Will Tschetter who can also play the 4 or 5. Watkins could play some 3 as well, but once again, it feels like Michigan has answers there. Rubin Jones, Nimari Burnett, and Roddy Gayle could all play the 2 or 3. But one thing is for certain, it’s always good to add talent.
