Michigan football is coming off an extraordinary 2023 football season in which it saw wins over rivals Michigan State and Ohio State, a Big Ten championship against Iowa, and a national championship over Washington — the first since 1997.

The Wolverines are set to lose several big contributors from this season including J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum, Zak Zinter, Junior Colson, Mike Sainristil, among others. Michigan could also be losing some of its coaching staff including head coach Jim Harbaugh, who is taking NFL interviews, and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is also a hot commodity.

But even with significant losses, the Wolverines could, and should, be a formidable force in 2024. Fox analyst Joel Klatt previewed his way-too-eary top 10 2024 teams for next season and he put Michigan at No. 7.

Klatt believes Harbaugh will be off to the NFL, but he thinks Michigan will stay internal and bring Sherrone Moore into the fold as the head coach. Moore did everything you could possibly want in an interim head coach. He beat Penn State, Maryland, and Ohio State during the biggest stretch of the season while Harbaugh was suspended and he would stabilize the culture fit in Ann Arbor if Harbaugh would indeed leave for the NFL.

The Fox analyst believes bringing back Donovan Edwards, along with Kalel Mullings, will make Michigan run the ball as effective as it has in the past. Even with the loss of six offensive linemen, the Wolverines should be able to block as well as they always do with that being a big identity for Michigan. Klatt thinks between Alex Orji, freshman Jadyn Davis, or maybe through the transfer portal — Michigan will find competent enough quarterback play to itself a playoff team once again in 2024.

Klatt’s way-too-early top 10 are:

10: Penn State

9: Notre Dame

8: Utah

7: Michigan

6: Ole Miss

5: Alabama

4: Texas

3: Oregon

2: Ohio State

1: Georgia
