There’s no denying that Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh is currently exploring a NFL return. He’s already interviewed once with the Los Angeles Chargers and the Atlanta Falcons, and now it appears as though he’s scheduled for a second interview with the Chargers this week.

There are obviously several factors at play when it comes to Harbaugh’s decision making process.

One of the top factors is that Harbaugh still has an itch to chase the Lombardi Trophy, as he made clear back in 2022 when he was interviewing with the Minnesota Vikings.

“There was a tugging at me that I was once that close to a Super Bowl, and I didn’t get it. Some NFL jobs came open. I was contacted by the (Minnesota) Vikings.

“For better or for worse, it was something I wanted to explore. I went in thinking, ‘I’m gonna have 100 percent conviction on this, and if they (Minnesota) have 100 percent conviction on this, then it’s something I’m gonna do.”

Although Harbaugh didn’t end up moving forward with the Vikings, he continued to explore his NFL options the following year by interviewing with the Denver Broncos prior to the 2023 season. Now, as Michigan looks ahead to the 2024 season, Harbaugh is once again eyeing NFL opportunities.

Another major factor is the NCAA and what punishments could potentially be handed down as a result of the sign-stealing issue that surrounded the program this past season. While the Big Ten conference already issued a three-game suspension for Harbaugh during the 2023 season relating to that issue, it is expected that the NCAA will issue additional punishments into 2024. According to various reports, Harbaugh is looking for some assurances from the University of Michigan that he would have some protections in his new contract if the NCAA were to act.

Regardless of how this year’s edition of “Harbaugh-to-the-NFL” plays out, it’s clear that this is an annual tradition that all Michigan fans would like to see go away moving forward. Ideally, Harbaugh would decide to remain in Ann Arbor and the annual dance with the NFL would come to an end. The next best-case scenario is that Harbaugh pursues his dream of chasing the Lombardi Trophy, while Sherrone Moore steps in as the newest head coach of the Michigan Wolverines.

Either way, we’ll all have the answer one way or another in the coming days.
