Michigan had several players named to All-America teams in 2023 during its national championship run. Players like Zak Zinter, Blake Corum, Kris Jenkins, Mike Sainristil, and Mason Graham made at least one of the major groups that put out All-America Honors.
Heading into the ’24 campaign, the Wolverines lost all but one of those players to either graduation or to the NFL draft. Michigan will look different a season from now, but the maize and blue do have some household names that will return to action.
It’s that time of the year where people will create way-too-early lists and ESPN put out its early All-America team heading into 2024.
Chris Low created a first and second All-American team for the 2024 season. There were four Wolverines who cracked the list.
- TE Colston Loveland
It’s not shocking to see Loveland getting some love early. The now-junior was a featured weapon in the Michigan offense. He was second on the team with 649 receiving yards and with both Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson gone — Loveland could be the No. 1 option in ’24. He’s an elite receiving tight end, but is a sound blocker as well. The NFL will be excited when he puts his name into the hat when his career is done in Ann Arbor. -
“The 6-foot-5 Loveland bulked up to 245 pounds and emerged as a staple in the Wolverines’ offense on their way to the national championship. He finished third on the team with 45 catches, averaging 14.4 yards per catch, and hauled in four touchdown receptions while earning first-team All-Big Ten honors. There will be several high-quality tight ends around the country in 2024, but Loveland’s skills as both a receiver and blocker pushed him to the top of the list.”
- DT Mason Graham
Graham is back for a junior season and was named an All-American in 2023. Grahm was the top run-defender on Michigan this past season and with his sidekick, Kenneth Grant, returning — the Wolverines have one of the best interior duos in all of football. Graham should see an increased role in 2024 with Kris Jenkins heading to the NFL, and you can expect to see even more from the junior. -
“Graham was an integral piece of a Michigan defense that was the backbone of the Wolverines’ national championship team. He returns as one of the top interior defensive linemen in college football after earning first-team All-Big Ten honors. The 6-3, 318-pound Graham played with a broken thumb through much of last season and was at his best in the postseason.”
- CB Will Johnson
If Johnson was able to enter the 2024 NFL draft as a sophomore he would be a first-round pick. But luckily for Michigan fans, Johnson has to return to Ann Arbor for one more season. The sky is the ceiling for the former five-star recruit. He is a lock-down defender with great hands. The Wolverines know they can leave Johnson to defend the opposing team’s best WR. -
“In 2023, Johnson went from being one of the best freshmen in the country to one of the best cornerbacks in the country. He’s poised to be even better next season after earning consensus first-team All-Big Ten honors. Johnson (6-2, 202) has great size for a cornerback and didn’t give up any touchdowns in 321 coverage snaps. He was the defensive MVP in the national championship game.”
- S Rod Moore
Michigan got a big boost with the return of Rod Moore for his senior year. Moore and Makari Paige will make a formidable duo in the secondary for a third-straight season. The Ohio native had an injury-plagued season early on in 2023, but once he returned, Moore showed why he was going early All-American hype a season ago. -
Moore was listed as a second-team player and there was no discussion about any of the second-team members.
