After a nine year stint with Michigan, Jim Harbaugh has said his goodbye to Ann Arbor. Harbaugh accepted a deal with the Los Angeles Chargers and will head back to the NFL in hopes to win the coveted Super Bowl.
It was a memorable time for Harbaugh. He came back to his alma mater to restore Michigan back to glory. It took some time — more time than most thought it would. There were peaks and valleys. Some valleys were low. Harbaugh lost five straight games to rival Ohio State and went 2-4 during the 2020 COVID-19 year. Fans wanted Harbaugh gone, but instead, the Michigan man took a massive pay cut to remain in Michigan. Harbaugh fired some close friends and longtime assistants, hired some young coaches, and restored the culture at Michigan.
Harbaugh went on an unprecedented run as the head coach at Michigan. He beat the Buckeyes three times from 2021-2023. Won three straight Big Ten championships. Made it to three College Football Playoff appearances. And finally, in 2023, Harbaugh won the whole thing with the Wolverines.
Fans are probably bitter sweet right now. It’s hard to see Harbaugh walk away after just winning a national championship, but let’s be honest, Harbaugh has flirted with the NFL plenty of times. He has an itch to scratch when it comes to winning a Super Bowl. And he feels that it’s time to go and try to do it after putting Michigan back on the national stage — something he promised to do.
All signs point to Sherrone Moore taking over as the next head coach. A new era in Ann Arbor is about to take shape, but before that happens, fans can take a deep breathe and enjoy what Harbaugh did for the Michigan Wolverines.
