The end of the Jim Harbaugh era at Michigan became official yesterday, as news broke that Harbaugh had accepted the head coaching position with the Los Angeles Chargers. It’s certainly a bittersweet ending to what has been an incredible ride with Harbaugh running the show in Ann Arbor, particularly given the fact that the football program is in as good of a place as it has ever been.

Michigan is 40-3 over the last three seasons, has beaten Ohio State three consecutive times, won back-to-back-to-back Big Ten Championships, and now a national championship in 2023. There was hope among the fan base that Harbaugh would remain in Ann Arbor and continue to build on the tremendous success he helped create over the last three seasons, but his desire to chase a Super Bowl in the NFL was just too strong to keep him home.

Once news broke of his departure, Michigan players (former, current, and future) took to social media to react:

Braiden McGregor, EDGE
Trevor Keegan, OL
Zak Zinter, OL
Sherrone Moore, OC/HC
Rayshaun Benny, DL
Semaj Morgan, WR
Carter Smith, QB (2025 Commit)
Jaden Smith, LB (2024 Class)
Taylor Lewan, former Michigan OL
JJ McCarthy, QB
Karsen Barnhart, OL

It’s hard to say if Harbaugh’s departure will result in a change of heart for current recruits, or if any current members of the roster will opt to enter the transfer portal. The general consensus right now is that OC Sherrone Moore is set to be named as the next head coach of the Wolverines in the coming days, and that would presumably go a long way in terms of keeping all of the key pieces in place – both on staff and on the roster.
