It’s been another busy news week for the Michigan Football program. Here’s everything you might have missed:
Steve Clinkscale reverses course, will join Jim Harbaugh’s staff in Los Angeles
According to 247Sports, Steve Clinkscale informed players earlier in the week that he would be remaining with the Michigan Football program. Just days later, reports surfaced that Clinkscale had a change of heart – and that he will instead be joining Jim Harbaug’s staff with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Michigan hires Wink Martindale as Defensive Coordinator
Martindale has spent the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator with the New York Giants, and was the defensive coordinator from 2018-22 for the Baltimore Ravens. Most importantly, Martindale’s defensive scheme is nearly identical to what Michigan has run over the last three seasons with former U-M defensive coordinators Mike Macdonald and Jesse Minter.
Michigan formally announces new tight ends coach hire
University of Michigan Head Football Coach Sherrone Moore announced Saturday (Feb. 5) the hiring of Steve Casula as the program’s tight end coach. Casula was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UMass the past two seasons (2022-23) after serving as an offensive analyst at Michigan during the 2019-21 seasons.
Michigan’s Rose Bowl win over Alabama Cemented in history
The official twitter account for the Rose Bowl shared a new addition to the iconic stadium, cementing Michigan’s 27-20 overtime victory over Alabama in the CFP Semifinal. Also worth noting that quarterback JJ McCarthy and defensive lineman Mason Graham had their names added as the offensive and defensive MVPs.
Michigan makes top group for 5-star safety
Pickett hails from Tampa (FL) Zephyrhills and has elite length standing at 6-foot-2, 170-pounds. According to the Composite rankings, Pickett is the No. 7 ranked recruit in the ’25 cycle and the No. 3 defensive back.
Pickett has visited Florida the most — seven times — but didn’t name the Gators in his top group. He’s been in Ann Arbor four times and Pickett is very high on Michigan — especially after Michigan reportedly retained Steve Clinkscale. In an interview with On3, Pickett had a very short but strong response about Michigan. “Michigan just feels like home.”
Michigan Football hires Senior Associate AD and General Manager
Sean Magee served as the Associate Athletic Director for football at U-M from 2017 to 2022, and has spent the last year as Chief of Staff with the Chicago Bears. According to a report from 247, it looked like Magee was set to take a position with Oklahoma, but Sherrone Moore stepped in and was able to lure him back to Ann Arbor.
