Now that the three-year J.J. McCarthy era has come to an end, it’s time for a new signal caller in Ann Arbor. There will be a battle between Jayden Denegal, Davis Warren, Jack Tuttle, Jaydn Davis, and Alex Orji — or a potential transfer portal QB come April.
But right now, there is a ton of hype surrounding soon-to-be junior, Alex Orji. While fans are being cautiously optimistic, people are excited to see what the physical specimen could do as the starting quarterback at Michigan.
Well, if you were already excited about the potential of Orji, you might be really excited after hearing what 247Sports analyst Clint Brewster had to say.
According to Brewster, someone at Michigan told him Orji will be a QB like Alabama QB Jalen Milroe, but a more natural passer.
Milroe had his ups and downs as the Alabama QB this past season. Early on, he actually was benched and didn’t start a game against USF, but regained his starting spot a week later. By the end of the year, Milroe was one of the best quarterbacks in the country and finally became polished as a thrower. Milroe took Bama to the College Football Playoff — then lost to Michigan — and he became Alabama’s Offensive Player of the Year. Milroe threw for nearly 2900 yards last year along with 23 touchdowns through the air. But the biggest thing with Milroe was his ability to run. He rushed for over 500 yards and scored 12 times on the ground.
If Orji could become the next Milroe, then Michigan would be set for the next two-to-three years at QB. We already know Orji can run the ball — he did so just about every time he was in the game. While we’ve heard he has a cannon for an arm, we’ve only seen him throw one time in his collegiate career. During Rose Bowl prep week, coaches and players told the media that Orji was the Jalen Milroe of the scout team to prepare the Michigan defense.
One thing for certain is that Sherrone Moore will start the best player when Week 1 rolls around. If that’s Orji, and he has the ability of a Jalen Milroe, Michigan fans will be excited when they see him take the field against Fresno State.
