After an NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) post surfaced on Monday about then-former Michigan safety Quinten Johnson inking a new NIL deal in Ann Arbor, it was starting to become a foregone conclusion that Johnson would be back with the Wolverines in 2024.

On Tuesday, that became a reality. Posting on Instagram, Johnson posted the following:

“I’M BACK. After heavy consideration of the current status of an injury suffered late in last years national championship run, I have decided to forgo the NFL and return to the University of Michigan for one more year. With that being said it’s time to win another National Championship!”

Johnson announced he would forgo his sixth year of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft back in early February, but has since reversed courses. The Wolverines did lose safety Keon Sabb to the transfer portal, where he ended up in Alabama, so with the return of Johnson for a sixth year — that loss feels slightly easier for Michigan.

Johnson has been on the team since 2020 and he’s seen more and more play time each passing season. He played in 15 games this past season. He recorded 15 tackles and an INT in 2023 for the Wolverines. During his career in Ann Arbor, Johnson has 36 career tackles, a TFL, and an INT.

The Silver Spring (MD) native should have a major impact for the Wolverines’ secondary in 2024. Rod Moore and Makari Paige will automatically slot into the starting lineup, but by adding another veteran presence, Johnson should see even more play time in ’24 than he did last season.
