The Michigan basketball team is bound to look vastly different when they take the court next winter. Head coach Juwan Howard is out after five seasons in Ann Arbor and since his dismissal, Michigan had already lost freshman G George Washington III.
On Monday, the basketball team took a significant hit — leading scorer Dug McDaniel announced he would also enter the transfer portal. He averaged 16.3 points, 4.7 assists, 3.7 rebounds, shooting 41% from the field, and 36.8% from 3. McDaniel was just one of three Michigan players to average over double-digit points on the year.
It wasn’t just a tough season for McDaniel on the court, as Michigan won just eight games this season, but he also had battles off the court. He was suspended six games this season — six road games in a row — for academic issues. Coach Howard allowed McDaniel to play all the home games, but couldn’t play in six-straight away contests. It was hard for McDaniel to get into a flow at times with not playing in multiple games on the year.
With the loss of both Washington and McDaniel, Michigan no longer has any scholarship point guards on the roster. The Wolverines do have freshman guards Christian Anderson and Durral Brooks coming into the fold, but both are waiting to see who gets hired to take over the program.
