It wasn’t a shock when sophomore guard Dug McDaniel entered the transfer portal, but it was a sting for the Wolverines hoops team to lose their highest scoring player.

There was a small hope that new coach Dusty May could retain McDaniel, but on Wednesday, the former Wolverine announced his decision to transfer out west to Kansas State.

During his two-year Michigan career, McDaniel played in 60 games and was one of the focal points of the Wolverines’ offense. As a freshman McDaniel was thrust into a starting role early after guard Jaelin Llewellyn went down with a season-ending injury early on in 2022.

The Washington DC native led Michigan in scoring this past season. He averaged over 16 points and shot over 36% from 3. Juwan Howard did put McDaniel on a six-game suspension for away games and that caused some chemistry issues between McDaniel and the Michigan offense at times. It was tough for McDaniel to get things rolling while sitting out every other game during that stretch.

McDaniel will now have two years to play under Jerome Tang and the Kansas State Wildcats.

Michigan currently has just one guard on its roster and that’s soon-to-be freshman point guard Durral Brooks.
