It’s a move that I certainly didn’t see coming, but sophomore defensive back DJ Waller Jr. has reportedly entered his name into the transfer portal. Waller’s name has been mentioned frequently throughout the spring session as a guy who has played extremely well, and the belief was that he’d be competing for starting reps this fall.
Instead, it appears as though Waller will explore his options in the portal – a move that is shocking to say the least.
Overall, Michigan has largely avoided losing any significant talent to the portal this off-season, which is particularly impressive given all of the turnover with the coaching staff. The biggest loss came earlier this year when veteran safety Keon Sabb transferred to Alabama. Waller is certainly another big loss to the secondary, particularly when considering that veteran safety Rod Moore is expected to miss significant time in 2024 with an injury during the spring.
For those keeping track, the spring portal window will remain open until April 30 – meaning Michigan fans (and coaches) will certainly be on edge for the next six days.
