Juwan Howard’s coaching career at the collegiate level has officially come to an end, at least for now. The former Michigan head coach is reportedly set to make a return to the NBA, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. According to the report, Howard has agreed to join the Brooklyn Nets staff as an assistant coach.

This feels like a good move for Howard, who spent six season as an assistant coach with the Miami Heat before becoming a first-time head coach at the University of Michigan. Obviously his time at Michigan didn’t go as planned, and it led to the university deciding to part ways after a the Wolverines finished dead last in the Big Ten conference at 7-21 (8-24) overall, along with missing the NCAA tournament for a second straight season.

In addition to the poor performances on the court, Howard was also at the center of several incidents that placed his role as head coach at the University of Michigan in jeopardy. An outburst directed at Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon in 2021, a physical altercation with a member of the Wisconsin coaching staff in 2022, and an altercation with his own strength and conditioning coach, Jon Sanderson, were just some of the issues that also played a major role in Howards departure from Michigan following the 2023-24 season.
