It was a dream come true for the Michigan football QB: J.J. McCarthy became a top-10 NFL Draft pick. The Minnesota Vikings traded up one spot in the 2024 NFL Draft from Pick No. 11 to No. 10 to get their guy. The Vikings were in desperate need of a QB after not signing Kirk Cousins to another contract and Minnesota had Sam Darnold as the No. 1 guy heading into the draft — not exactly the best situation.
McCarthy and the Vikings were linked together for quite some time and it was evident that Vikings’ coach Kevin O’Connell wanted McCarthy and was enamored by his physical tools and his leadership. The Vikings had several meetings with McCarthy and not only did Minnesota get its guy, but the Vikings didn’t have to pay an arm and a leg to get the guy they wanted.
Prior to picking McCarthy, the Vikings official X(Twitter) account released behind the scene football of GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and HC Kevin O’Connell calling J.J. McCarthy to let him know they were going to select him.
You can hear the excitement in McCarthy’s voice. He told the Vikings he “promised they would win” if Minnesota selected him and that’s what Adofo-Mensah asked him on the phone.
McCarthy kept telling O’Connell that he was “fired up” to be a Minnesota Viking and was “ready to get to work”. McCarthy told O’Connell he “would have waited all day and all two days for you guys” to become a Minnesota Viking.
