Michigan did a great job at retaining its roster after a majority of the coaching staff left for the NFL — including head coach Jim Harbaugh. The Wolverines haven’t been seriously hit by the transfer portal, but like most schools, players will leave for other opportunities. The biggest hit to Michigan’s roster was when junior safety Keon Sabb left the program for Alabama.
Recently, the Wolverines lost a trio of young players: DJ Waller Jr., Amir Herring, and Jeremiah Beasley. On Saturday afternoon, Waller Jr. officially made his decision clear. He announced he would be committing to Kentucky, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
Waller Jr. had interest in Kentucky as a recruit, but he chose to come to Ann Arbor. He played quite a bit as a freshman last season for Michigan. Waller Jr. played in 12 games during his true freshman season and he tallied 12 tackles. He was expected to have a major role in 2024 for the Michigan secondary, but it appears that players like Jyaire Hill and Zeke Berry might’ve surpassed Waller Jr. on the depth chart.
Michigan is a little thin in the secondary, but there could be good news coming Michigan’s way. Former WR/CB Amorion Walker — who left for Ole Miss — is back in the transfer portal, but the Wolverines are the favorite to land Walker.
