For the second time in his young Michigan career, guard George Washington III has hit the transfer portal. Washington III went into the portal after Juwan Howard’s time as the Michigan head coach was over. But after Dusty May was hired from FAU, Washington III decided to come back to the Wolverines.

Since Washington III withdrew from the portal, Michigan went out and landed five guards from either the portal or out of high school: Tre Donaldson, Rodney Gayle, Rubin Jones, Justin Pippen, and Lorenzo Cason.

Washington III came to Michigan as a four-star recruit from the state of Ohio. He played in 22 games as a freshman under Howard but struggled to find meaningful minutes. It appeared he was looking for a fresh start, but it looked like he was going to stick around under coach May.With the Wolverines landing several impact guards from the portal, it’s possible Washington III is looking to go somewhere where he will be in a featured role.

Michigan will now have one more scholarship available to give out with the loss of Washington III.
