It’s not secret Michigan might need some help in the secondary department. The Wolverines lost safety Keon Sabb to Alabama and star safety Rod Moore is out for the foreseeable future healing up from an injury suffered. The Wolverines did bring back Quinten Johnson to pair up with Makari Paige, but after those two, the safety depth is thin when it comes to game experience.

Michigan has talented players behind Paige and Johnson. Young guys like Brandyn Hillman and true freshman Jacob Oden would love to hit the field this fall, but the Wolverines are looking to potentially add some depth to go along with those guys.

According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, Michigan has reached out to former five-star safety and Texas A&M transfer Jacoby Mathews. Mathews has reportedly heard from 12 teams since he entered the portal on April 16 — including Ohio State.

Mathews was a 2022 prospect and would have two years of eligibility remaining. During his two seasons with the Aggies, the hard-hitting safety has recorded 67 tackles, one INT, and five pass breakups.

While it’s hard to imagine Michigan could offer Mathews a starting job this fall, the Wolverines could offer him a year of experience rotating in on defense with a chance to start next season.
