It’s been a whirlwind for former Michigan basketball player George Washington III. He came to Ann Arbor as a top-100 recruit and the sole member of the 2023 class for Juwan Howard. The Ohio native struggled to gain minutes on the court, and while he played in 22 minutes, Washington III averaged just over six minutes per contest.
Once Howard was fired, Washington III entered the transfer portal. But once Dusty May was hired as the new Michigan coach, Washington III declared he would return to Ann Arbor.
Not so fast. Washington III then re-entered the portal. And on Thursday, Washington III announced he would be transferring to Richmond to play for the Spiders.
The 6-foot-2 guard will have a fresh start to his collegiate playing career. Entering his sophomore year, Washington III will have a great opportunity to carve out a large role in the A-10 Conference. While he shot just 22% from 3 for the Wolverines, Washington III was known as a good 3-point shooter and is hoping to show that for Richmond in 2024.
Michigan itself still has one open scholarship left on the roster and the belief is the Wolverines are looking for a guard to fill out the roster.
