If it feels like we’ve spent a lot of time lately talking about Ohio State fans, journalists, and even administrators making excuses for repeatedly losing to Michigan – it’s because we have.

For years, the Buckeye faithful have used every excuse they could come up with to try and minimize Michigan’s incredible run of success. Everything from the weather to sickness, a “few bad plays” to “they cheated,” the last three years have proven that there’s literally no excuse that is off limits for a fan base that is clearly struggling to cope with losing.

The latest coping strategy surfaced yesterday, when a former Buckeye and Wolverine debated a topic surrounding two National Championship teams. The question: Which championship team was better: 2014 Ohio State, or 2023 Michigan?

You can listen to the debate below.

Although it’s hilarious to watch a former Buckeye and Wolverine passionately debate the topic, it comes as no surprise that the debate carried over to social media – where Buckeye fans latched on and used it as another way to try and discredit Michigan’s success.

Forget about the fact that the 2014 Buckeyes lost at home to Virginia Tech (a team that finished 7-6 that season), or the fact that it took two overtimes to beat Penn State (another team that finished 7-6 that season), Buckeye faithful are absolutely certain that Ohio State’s 2014 team would destroy Michigan’s 2023 team.

This is just a small sample size of hundreds of similar responses.

So there you have it. Ohio State fans can now hang their hats on the fact that they know the 2014 Buckeye championship team would easily beat the 2023 Wolverine championship team, despite plenty of evidence suggesting otherwise. After all, who needs real victories when you can celebrate hypothetical victories?
